Black Spot

This is a super fast and fun ship game by David Bezio. It is written for 1/2400 scale historical wooden ships from the age of sail, but can be use with others very easily. We use it for historical American War of Independence and American War of 1812 battles at that scale, plus fantasy fleet battles at 1/600 scale.

A pdf copy of the rules are available here and the tokens & templates are available in the Black Spot Game Components file here. Check them out!

We are still just getting started with this game here. Images from our early sessions are shown below. You can see we started playtesting with unpainted ships on blue fabric, then to primed, then finally to painted with a water themed mat. We have islands, reefs, etc. in process. We’ll update these as things continue to improve!

For our first encounter, the American fleet tried to take advantage of their faster and more maneuverable ships. On this day at least, it was not successful. They did manage to sink one British ship-of-the-line, but ended up loosing 3 of their own ships, including the admiral’s Flagship. It was great fun!

We have a commercial license for 3D printing the below islands and costal terrain pieces designed by Warscape 3D that are perfect for Black Spot or similar games. They debuted at Cold Wars this year and will be added to the webstore soon. There are even forts, ports, and fantasy pieces that we will add latter (once they are printed and painted). The below image is from Warscape 3D’s kickstarter. We’ll update this page with photos of our own painted pieces ass soon as we have more to show.

Our own fleets are getting painted slowly but surely. They are at least good enough for gaming at the club, and not too embarrassing to show here. These are the British. The American fleet is lagging slightly behind but should be ready for our next club game session.
